Nutrisense: A Smart January AI Alternative

Person holding iPhone using the Nutrisense App

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re already aware of the benefits of CGMs and how this technology can help you make better choices for your metabolic health. Continuous glucose monitors make it easier to understand how your diet, fitness, and sleep routines may be impacting your overall wellbeing.

Luckily, there are lots of CGM programs out there, and once you’ve found one that you like, committing to a routine to help you reach your health goals is that much easier. But with various options out there, how can you know which program is worth your time and investment?

It’s an important question, and the good news is that startups like Nutrisense and January both offer tailored programs that can help you make more informed decisions for your health. However, there are some key factors that distinguish these two CGM programs.

So, while we believe in our own brand, we’re going to be as fair as possible and break down exactly what’s provided by each program and what benefits they have. Let’s take a look.

Why Should You Choose Nutrisense?

This is just a quick glance at the differences between these two CGM programs. While each program provides access to real-time glucose data without having to use finger pricks, there is a contrast in what kind of overall member experience you’ll have.

With Nutrisense, you’ll wear a CGM and see what kind of impact your diet, workouts, stress levels, and sleep may be having on your blood glucose levels. Nutrisense members will also have:

  • The ability to view glucose responses and variability in real-time
  • A mobile app where you can log your dietary habits and exercise data
  • Access to 1:1 support and guidance from an expert nutritionist
  • CGM sensors delivered to you monthly

What is a CGM?

With a CGM, you can observe real-time glucose responses to lifestyle factors like food, stress, exercise and sleep.

Whether your goal is related to diet and weight loss, improved athletic performance, or making healthier lifestyle choices to support better wellness, Nutrisense can support you along the way.

But what really makes Nutrisense stand out is the access to support from a personal nutritionist—which you get FREE for one month with any plan.

With the support of a personal nutritionist, you’ll be able to easily interpret the insights provided by your CGM sensor and use this information to make healthy lifestyle changes. You’ll also be held accountable throughout your journey and get all the support you need along the way.

Key Features of Nutrisense

So, what can members of Nutrisense expect to gain from the program? Here are some of the main features:

  • Real-time insights: Easily scan your CGM for glucose readings in real-time.
  • Free nutritionist support for one month: One of our expert nutritionists will help you interpret your data and use it to make healthy lifestyle changes. And you can upgrade to the paid add-ons for extended, ongoing coaching through your journey.
  • Log meals and daily activities: Track your daily habits and view trends over time inside the Nutrisense app.
  • Sync with other wearable devices: Easily connect your Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit, or Oura ring to the Nutrisense app to get a better picture of your overall health.
  • Community access: Connect with other members, ask questions, and share insights with people on a similar journey

Let’s learn more about these features and the comparable options available through the January program.

Experts vs. Artificial Intelligence

When starting out on either program, you will first need to input your personal data to help the app better understand you. After all, everyone’s body is unique and your wellness goals may differ from the next person.

Here’s where you start to see more prominent differences between the Nutrisense and January programs. First and foremost, Nutrisense provides its subscribers with access to a credentialed nutritionist—a real professional who can provide advice and feedback in real time.

By contrast, January users rely on app-generated data for feedback. Sure, AI feedback is better than no data at all. But at Nutrisense, technology is paired with human expertise, and access to a real person to chat back and forth with!

The Nutrisense app also gives you real-time feedback based on your meals and activities, which is prominently displayed in the app. The January program, on the other hand, calculates a composite score derived from blood glucose levels, heart rate trends, and meals.

However, the calculation of this score is not visible to the users, which may make it harder to make the best decisions possible about your health.

More Variety with Nutrisense

Another distinction that jumps out between these two programs is the number of plans available. January has a single one-month plan for its subscribers. Once you complete the initial program, you’ll be able to view your options for continuing on in the program with AI-guidance.

Nutrisense, on the other hand, has a variety of plans, with the 12-month plan offering the biggest savings over time. A free month of nutritionist support is included in all of Nutrisense’s plans.

Rather than relying on a one size fits all algorithm, you can choose the length of a program that works for you and know exactly what to expect before your journey begins.

Nutrisense vs January: Pricing Differences

Nutrisense members can choose from four plans which vary by price and length. Each plan provides you with two CGMs per month, and comes with one free month of nutritionist support. These are the plans available through Nutrisense:

  • A 3-month plan for $299 per month
  • A 6-month plan for $250 per month
  • A 12-month plan for $225 per month
  • A month-to-month plan for $399 per month

When you sign up for the January program, you’ll pay $288 for your first 30 days. This payment includes an activation kit (one CGM, a telehealth evaluation, and AI calibration). Once your first month ends, January will give you the option to purchase additional CGMs for an added fee or sign up for annual or monthly plans.

Ease of Use

In order to apply and activate the CGMs provided by January, you’ll also have to download and register for the Libre app and use this app to regularly scan your CGM. This means that two separate apps are required for this program.

January’s website and app are relatively easy to navigate through, but there may be a learning curve for users who are new to glucose monitoring. You will need to rely on the app’s instructions and the AI insights it provides you with.

After your first 14 days in the program, January’s AI technology will provide you with a report full of health recommendations, overnight fasting data, and an analysis of your calorie intake.

Nutrisense makes things easy for first-time users—only one app is required for activation and daily use with some sensors. Because we recognize that you may be new to glucose monitoring, your nutritionist will join you at the beginning of your program to walk you through the insights provided by your CGM.

What Nutrisense Does Better

The Nutrisense app does more than just track your blood sugar levels. Inside the Nutrisense app, you can track your ketones with an external synced ketone-measuring device, macros (protein, carbs, and fat), daily sleep average, daily calories, steps taken, and more.

The app’s Insights feature lets you know which areas you may need to improve in, and even allows you to view trends over time so you can track your progress. And, if you’re curious and itching to learn more, the Nutrisense app provides a free in-app educational course that guide you through modules on:

  • Glucose basics
  • Nutrition essentials
  • Meal-planning
  • Metabolic health basics
  • Achieving long-term success

Overall, the Nutrisense app provides you with more thorough information for your diet, lifestyle, and overall wellness. The program includes advanced analytics allowing you to track your glucose values over a seven, 14, and 30-day period. You do not get the same attention to detail from the January app.
