Bryce Twichell Discusses Battling Brain Fog and Experimenting with Food Choices

Hi Bryce! Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.

I am 39 years old, born and raised in Reno, NV.  I’m a Maintenance Technician for the local water company, and I’ve worked there for the last 20 years.

So, what led you to Nutrisense?

After battling brain fog for a couple of years, I began exploring natural ways to deal with my situation. I started cutting out sugars and processed foods and began adopting a Paleo diet, which in turn became a Keto diet as time went on.

I wanted to reintroduce some carbs to my diet after doing Keto for about six to 12 months.  I began experimenting on my own using a finger prick type of Ketone and Glucose monitor.

I was doing multiple finger pricks postprandially with each type of food I was experimenting with.

Then I stumbled across the general idea of blood glucose trends and CGMs while researching carnivore/animal-based diets online, and I found a few options. Nutrisense was the best balance of availability and price.

What were your main goals on your wellness journey with the Nutrisense program?

My main goal was to find what foods worked best for me, so I could “tune” things to my own body.

And how long did you sign up for?

I signed up for a six-month membership. I immediately started getting the data I was looking for, and I’m planning to check in every six months or so to see if anything is changing.

How does the price of the program factor in for you?

Price was a major factor for me as I did not have a ton of disposable income. I love the application and the fact that you can keep the data forever… I am also very happy that you offer the opportunity to keep your pricing and get a couple of sensors every six months!

What are some overall takeaways from your experience so far?

One of the things that surprised me the most is the difference in how your body reacts to carbs when you eat them with some fat and/or protein at the same time.

I found that when I eat some carbs in isolation, I have a less favorable response than when I include them with fat and protein simultaneously.

What are some of the foods you tested—was there anything that was particularly surprising?

I tested everything from homemade, long-fermented sourdough bread to potatoes, tubers, and all kinds of fruit.

I even tried a handful of sugary drinks that I used to drink just so I could show myself what I had been doing to my blood sugar unknowingly. It was very eye-opening!

Did you fast while wearing the CGM?

I tried both intermittent fasting as well as a couple of 24-hour fasts while wearing the monitor.  I had been doing these types of fasts while doing Keto before using the monitor, so it was good to have the monitor confirm what I already knew about these fasts allowing my glucose levels to stay pretty flat and low.

Exercise, sleep, and stress all affect your blood glucose, too—what are some of the things you learned about these things while wearing the monitor?

I did some experimenting with carb loading right before exercising.  I was amazed to see just how hard you have to work to offset bad decisions with how many carbs you eat.

Armed with that knowledge, I now know I would just rather forgo the bad decision than try to offset it.

And is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your journey?

The biggest takeaway from my wellness journey was how much worse my glucose reacts to complex carbohydrates than it does to simple sugars/fruit! It is basically the exact opposite of what most “experts” have told me.

I was also really nervous when I opened that first sensor and saw the size of that needle, but you literally cannot even feel it when it goes on!
