Hi Leigh! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi there! I am a momma of four children under five (one plus triplets!) Needless to say, life is hectic.
I have been an NSCA-CPT [NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer] since 2008, helping people discover their happiest and healthiest selves through fitness and nutrition.
In January 2020, a year after having the triplets, I needed help getting my body back, and I found the FASTer Way to Fat Loss program to do just that and then some.
It changed my relationship with food and ultimately helped strengthen my relationship with myself. Being in the fitness and nutrition industry, I know first-hand how confusing it is to know exactly what will be best for you and your body.
After several months, I knew I had found a game-changing sustainable lifestyle, so I became a certified coach to have a platform to spread the word about it.
And how did you find Nutrisense?
I first heard about Nutrisense through Mia Votapka, who was one of the dietitians.
I am clearly passionate about fitness and nutrition, so it was a no-brainer for me to try out Nutrisense’s CGM Program to explore how certain foods affected my blood sugar level.
What were some of your main goals when you were starting the program?
Achieving optimal health remains my main goal. And I know a big piece of the puzzle in overall health is keeping your blood sugar levels stable. So, wearing a CGM seemed like the next step in my journey just to learn more!
My main health goals, in the beginning, were to make sure what I was consuming in my fasted state wasn't breaking my fast. I also wanted to learn more about the timing of my meals and what specific foods affected my blood sugar levels.
How long did you use the CGM?
I used the CGM for close to six months. I continued because I wanted to see how my “different” seasons impacted my levels. I learned a lot from my experience with a CGM.
Tell us a bit about some of what you learned!
First of all, in my fasted state, when taking my supplements and vitamins, I am still in a fasted state.
Regarding the timing of meals: I learned that when I started eating each meal with balanced macros instead of just snacking on carbs, my blood sugar levels did not spike as much.
I also learned that eating the higher carb foods needed to happen in the middle of my eating window as opposed to the end, when I am not as active. This timing change will keep my levels more stable.
Specifically, dates and sprouted oats cause my blood levels to soar, making me think about when to consume these foods.
Did you see any impacts on other things like exercise?
In terms of workout, when I worked out towards the end of my fast (specifically a HIIT workout), my blood sugar levels spiked to its highest number.
I realized I was pushing myself too much and shouldn’t work out that late in a fasted state.
A surprising find: I meditate daily, and I know stress plays an important factor in these levels. There was a significant dip in my levels during my meditations, reinforcing how vital meditation is!
Did using the CGM help at all with accountability on your health journey?
Wearing the CGM most definitely helps with accountability. It was like having a “babysitter” watching me and what I was eating. And having the support of the dietitian, too was great. It really helped me answer questions and interpret my numbers.
That’s great! So, what would you say your main takeaway was?
I have learned so much throughout my wellness journey, but the main takeaway is that everybody’s body is different, and the most important relationship in your life is the one you have with yourself.
All in all, it was an eye-opening experience. I learned a lot and will be back as a member soon! I found the information fascinating and learned so much about my body and mind.
