Many people look to dieting to improve overall health by changing their eating habits. You may be drawn to a certain diet to lose weight, lower their risk of certain illnesses, or just to feel better overall. 

Luckily, eating healthy doesn’t always have to mean diligent calorie counting or elimination of major food groups. By finding the right diet and exercise plan for you and your health, reaching your wellness goals can be within reach.

The Mayo Clinic Diet is based on a 12-week three-phase plan — Lose It!, Live It!, and Maintenance.

  • Some meals may be imbalanced in terms of macronutrients, including lower protein breakfast options with higher amounts of added sugar like waffles, cinnamon rolls, and pancakes
  • Some meals may contain more processed ingredients, such as refined flours


The Nutrisystem diet plan ranges from about $9.99-$13.21 per day. 

3) Zone Diet

The Zone Diet is advertised as a low-glycemic, anti-inflammatory diet designed to reduce body fat and improve overall health. The “Zone” refers to the physiological state in your body where you’ve optimized your ability to control diet-induced inflammation. 

How it Works

The Zone Diet recommends that dieters fill each meal with 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent proteins and 30 percent fats. This is usually equivalent to about 30-40 grams of carbohydrates, 20-25 grams of protein, and 10-15 grams of fat.

The diet encourages consuming foods with a low glycemic index to help keep blood sugar levels stable.

7) South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet is developed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston, MD, and dietitian Marie Almon. It emphasizes eating high-fiber, lean sources of protein, and good fats, such as those found in nuts and avocados.

This diet encourages people to limit their intake of carbohydrates and sweets, and to focus on eating select sources of carbs. It also advises eating seafood and lean meats, such as chicken and turkey, and avoiding foods such as processed meats, white bread, and sugary snacks.

The South Beach Diet consists of three phases. 

  • First phase: You'll focus on eliminating refined carbohydrates, while still eating a variety of lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables. 
  • Second phase: You'll gradually increase your intake of healthy carbs, such as whole grains and fruits, while limiting butter, mayonnaise, and processed foods.
  • Third phase: You'll be able to include more healthy carbs in your diet, as well as healthy fats. The goal of this phase is to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.

  • Easy to follow and does not require complicated recipes

Why a Customized Diet is the Best Diet

One potential downside you may have noticed shared by all of the above diets is the lack of customization. When it comes to the best diet for you, it’s important to remember that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Everyone has different needs in terms of activity levels, calorie intake, macronutrient balance, and other factors. 

Any of the diets we mentioned may have positive components. But the benefit of a truly customized diet is that it allows you to create an eating plan specific to your healthy lifestyle and tailor it to your individual needs and goals. 

If you have particular dietary restrictions such as eliminating gluten or dairy products, or if you follow a keto or plant-based diet, a customized diet gives you more freedom to choose what works for you.
